Process

The aluminum is being cast using a process called sand casting. The "sand" used for casting is called green sand, and in its basic form it is generally made up of bentonite clay, fine sand, and water. The part you want to cast is placed on a flat surface, and the flask (usually a wooden or metal square) is placed over the part. Then you compress green sand around the the part inside the flask. This is then flipped over to reveal the flat side of the sand and the remaining visible side of the part and a mold release is sprayed onto this side. The other half of the flask is attached and green sand is then compressed onto the half with mold release. These halves are then separated and the part is removed, leaving a cavity for the metal to pour into.
