2020 Design Categories
There are three categories to which you can submit entries. Submissions will be judged
both by a panel and an open popular vote.
*We will approve all designs before printing. If we deem your submission to be
inappropriate for the challenge, we will notify you. You can either submit a
new design, or forfeit your participation in the challenge.
Creative Artistic Design
Design something that is creative, visually appealing, thought-provoking, etc. Designs
will be
judged by popular vote of WVU students and faculty.
Engineering Assembly
Designs submitted must contain a minimum of three separately printed pieces
which can be assembled together to create an entirely new object. The goal of this
challenge is to
transform the assembly components into something different and unique. The designs
do not have to
contain moving parts, but they can if desired. Assembly may contain as many parts
as desired by the
designer.
Bridge Design Challenge
This category challenges students to produce a bridge that is able to hold a
suspended weight from its center across a span of 4 inches. Bridges will be loaded via a crank mechanism with a tension force gauge. Bridges will be loaded until failure with winners decided by the amount of weight that can be held (which correlates to the strength of the structure’s design) as well as the total weight of the bridge itself (correlating to a conservation of materials).
2019 Design Categories

CO2 Dragster Design Challenge
This category challenges students to produce a that is within the size and weight constraints of the design challenge that will have the faster drag strip time at the course. Cars will be loaded with CO2 cartridges provided by the competition and fired on a track to race against the clock. Each car will receive 3 trials and the best of the 3 times will be kept and scored. The details around how to design the car are very important to follow so that the CO2 canister can be loaded and fired properly. Please follow the dimensions and rules laid out in the Makers 2019 Rules.
Early Registration Fee: $5 per submission
Normal Registration Fee: $8 per submission
Printing Fee: $5 per print job (if you opt to have us print for you)

PLAN AHEAD!
3D prints don't always go the way the designer intends and can take a very long time
to make. 3D printing an object can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over a day,
depending on the size, fill volume, and resolution of the print. Please bear this
in mind when submitting a design. Please submit your entries as early as possible.
This will allow you time to fix and refine your design in case there is an error
with the printing process.
Submitting a Design
Make your part in a computer aided design (CAD) software (e.g., Solidworks) and save
it as an .STL or .OBJ file. Then send it to us for approval.
Printing a Design
Choose whichever option best suits your needs:
- Have us print your design for $5, or
- Print your design using a 3rd party printing service of your choice.
